Mike
studied violin at the Birmingham Conservatoire and Trinity College of Music,
London under the distinguished violinist and teacher, Nicholas Roth. His
classical training helped Mike in his appreciation and understanding of Celtic
Folk and World Music, which has always run parallel with his classical playing.
Mike believes that good music, whatever the genre, should be appreciated and
enjoyed. He has done much to break down the musical barriers with his eclectic
taste in music. During his career he has played with many well-known orchestras
and musicians including Yehudi Menuhin, Nigel Kennedy
(in the pub), Aly Bain, Dave Swarbrick
and Ric Sanders.
Mike may be booked for concerts and
festivals as a solo artist, with his musical partner Meg Lawrie
or with The Red Violin Duo. (See below).
Red Violin’s repertoire is influenced by
Folk-Roots, Early and Renaissance styles of music. If a single
word were to describe their performance it would be ‘captivating.’ The
combination of guitar and violin is used to magical effect. Stylish
arrangements of Folk Roots music, reworking of old lute music from the 17th
century and some original composition make Red Violin a favourite
with audiences.
Red Violin Duo are available for concert engagements;
venues such as churches and medium sized halls
are most successful. The duo are also available to play at Early Music
Festivals, Folk Festivals, corporate events and
weddings. Check them out HERE.
